What’s Missing in the Childhood Obesity Debate?

Maryann Tomovich Jacobsen is an US based dietitian and author of this guest post. She sheds light on where we health care professionals should re-focus our attention in regards to childhood obesity. Mary Ann believes that it would bring about better results if we paid more attention to ”how we eat in this family” rather than only to ”what to eat”. Read more to find out why.

In irritable bowel, this diet helps

Uutta fosforin rajoittamiseen munuaisten vajaatoiminnassa

Ruokavalion fosforirajoitus on välttämätön dialyysipotilailla, joiden plasman fosforiarvo on yli suosituksen. Guida B et al. Nutr Metab Cardiovasc Dis 2010; Jul 5 (e-pub ahead of print)

Low dose of omega-3 fatty acids – no benefit in CAD

Omega-3 fatty acids, at least eicosapentaenic acid (EPA) ja docosahexaenic acid (DHA) have been associated with improved cardiovascular outcomes in earlier randomized trials (JELIS, Gissi Prevenzione ja DART trials). In this recent randomized trial, EPA, DHA ja alfalinolenic acid (ALA) supplementation as margarine did not prevent coronary outcomes vs placebo margarine. The used doses of EPA and DHA were low. Probiotic LGG -no benefit in infant allergy symtoms

Role of probiotics in immonology is emerging. Probiotics have shown some benefit in prevention and treatment of allergic diseases in children. However, a rather wide pool of studies have shown no benefit. This recent RCT in infants at risk joins into the group of disappointing results. Symtoms of allergy (wheezing, dermatitis) were not allievated by probiotic Lactobacillus GG. Rose AM et al. Clin Exp Allergy 2010;40:1398–1405.
